So what am I actually paying for?

Two things a free code can't do: change where it points after it's already printed, and tell you how many people scanned. If neither of those matters for your code, the free tier is the right answer, and we'd honestly rather you used it.

What happens to my codes if I stop paying?

They keep working for 30 days. After that, scanning shows a plain page saying the code is no longer active: never an error page, never an advert, and never a redirect somewhere you didn't choose. Everything is kept for a year, so resubscribing restores it exactly as it was.

Is there a limit on scans?

Each plan includes a generous monthly scan allowance. If you go over it, we simply pause counting scans for the rest of the month. Your codes never stop working. A printed code that broke because of a quota would be indefensible, so we don't do that.

If you ever stop paying, here’s exactly what happens

You should know this before you print anything, so we put it here rather than in the fine print.

Your codes keep working normally for 30 days after a subscription ends.
After that, scanning shows a neutral page saying the code is no longer active. It is not a 404, it is not an advertisement, and it never redirects anywhere you did not choose.
Your codes, destinations and analytics are retained for 365 days, so resubscribing restores everything exactly as it was.
Static codes you have downloaded are unaffected by any of this. They contain the destination directly and do not depend on us at all.
